Jerpoint Abbey Travel Tips:  Key Things to Know

Here is what I learned about Jerpoint Abbey

Established in the 12th Century

Jerpoint Abbey was founded around 1160 by Donal MacGillapatrick, the King of Osraige, and granted to the monks from the Cistercian Order. These monks hailed from Baltinglass Abbey, which was a daughter house of Mellifont, the first Cistercian abbey in Ireland. This rich history is evident in the abbey's exquisite Romanesque details.

Remarkable Tomb Structures

The abbey is renowned for its collection of stone carvings and tombs, which are considered some of the best in Ireland. Notable among these is the sculpture believed to portray Felix O'Dulany, the first abbot, and Bishop of Ossory. The delicate carvings that adorn these tombs are masterpieces of medieval art.

A Middle Ages 'Sculpture School'

In its heyday, Jerpoint Abbey was surrounded by a "school" of artisan sculptors. These skilled craftsmen were responsible for creating the intricate designs that adorn the abbey's walls. Their artistic legacy remains an important aspect of the site's allure.

Fascinating Cloister Arcade

The cloister arcade of Jerpoint Abbey is adorned with 36 carved stone panels. These panels include depictions of saints, bishops, knights, and dragons—reflecting both religious devotion and cultural influences of the time. The cloisters offer a picturesque and contemplative setting perfect for visitors seeking solitude.

The Monk's Refectory

In the southern range of the abbey's ruins lies the refectory, where monks once gathered for communal meals. The refectory was a central part of monastic life, and despite the passage of centuries, it retains an aura of tranquility and communal spirit. This space, like much of the abbey, invites reflection on the rhythms of monastic life.

Famous Visitors

It's believed that William Marshal, a prominent figure in medieval England, played a role in granting lands to Jerpoint Abbey. Marshal, renowned as "The Greatest Knight," is buried in Temple Church, London, but his influence during Anglo-Norman times stretched across Ireland. This connection adds a layer of historical prestige to Jerpoint’s fascinating narrative.

The Ghost of St Nicholas

Local legend suggests that the remains of St. Nicholas of Myra, the inspiration for Santa Claus, are buried near Jerpoint Abbey. Supposedly moved here by two crusaders in the 12th century, this tale adds a mystical allure to the area, inviting stories of ancient legends into modern visits.

A Window Into Ecclesiastical Architecture

The ruins of Jerpoint Abbey showcase prominent ecclesiastical architecture of medieval Ireland. Its detailed stonework, iconic tower, and cloister gardens reflect the architectural style and religious devotion of the Cistercian order. This silent testament to medieval artistry communicates stories that transcend language.

The Last Abbot

Jerpoint Abbey's community dwindled during the 16th-century dissolution of monasteries under Henry VIII. The last abbot, Oliver Grace, is remembered for his resilience and efforts to maintain religious practices amidst sweeping changes. His legacy serves as a reminder of the abbey’s enduring spiritual influence.

Exceptional Accessibility

Unlike many medieval sites, Jerpoint Abbey is remarkably accessible to visitors. Its preservation and signage make it possible for everyone, including those with limited mobility, to explore and appreciate its history fully. This accessibility fosters a deep connection with the past for all who visit.
